ARRIGO SACCHI (1946)

Arrigo Sacchi was born in Fusignano in 1946. He was the coach of Italy national football team in 1994 when Italy won second place at the World Cup.

Since childhood Sacchi played as an amateur in local football teams and then became a professional coach at the age of 31, in 1977. In 1982 his team, the junior team of Cesena, won the Scudetto Primavera.

In 1986-87 Cesena’s victory over Milan in San Siro (during Coppa Italia) made highlights in the news. Silvio Berlusconi engaged him to coach Milan from 1987 to 1991, when he left to become coach of the national football team. In 1996 he went back again to Milan and in 1998-1999 he was the coach of Atlético Madrid, for just seven months, after which he retired from the profession.

Sacchi’s strategy and approach to football and to his team players has brought profound changes to the sport in Italy; he’s regarded as one of the most important football coaches of the country.
