IN PONTA D’PI. Photography exhibition by the Guido Guidi School

‘IN PONTA D’PI’ is a line from a poem by Nevio Spadoni chosen as the title of the exhibition because it reflects an attitude shared by the fifteen artists involved, all of whom, in some way, belong to what might be described as a Romagna school of photography, which has achieved extraordinary results thanks to the work of photographers from different generations. Guido Guidi has been a mentor and, above all, a fellow traveller to them all; he is now recognised as one of the most important photographers on the international stage, both for his tireless research and for his teaching work, carried out mainly in Ravenna and Venice.
The exhibition also features a focus on a number of photographic projects originating in the Romagna region since 1986, including *Figli del deserto* (Fusignano), *Lugoland* (2004, Lugo), *Osservatorio fotografico* (2009, Ravenna) and the *Scuola elementare di fotografia* (2023, Ravenna).
In short, for decades Romagna has been a highly active photographic workshop. A workshop – as the exhibition’s subtitle states, referring to Roberto Longhi’s essay on Ferrara painting – characterised both by the presence of outstanding individual artists and by a clear tendency towards collective creation, in the very best spirit of the region’s cooperative tradition.
A creative hub where a perspective has taken shape that the curator, Silvia Loddo, likes to describe as ‘dialectal’ – in the highest sense of the term – as a reference to a language that has nurtured both extraordinary poets and equally extraordinary photographers, united by their ability to capture the beauty of the ordinary with the lightest of touches.
The exhibition is curated by Davide Caroli, director of the Museo delle Cappuccine, in collaboration with Silvia Loddo, an art historian and photography scholar who is currently director of the Pinacoteca Carlo Contini in Oristano. She was educated in Bologna, Ravenna, Paris and Siena and, for many years, closely followed developments in Romagna’s photographic scene, curating projects for the photographic observatory.
