CHIESA DI SAN GIOVANNI

The church dates back to the early XIV century and is romanesque-gothic style. After the 1688 earthquake it was rebuilt according to the still clearly visible Baroque style.

The facade is east oriented, leaning against the convent. The present entrance is located almost in the middle of the left nave. The rectangular doorway is framed by side columns resting on the high stone basaments that support also the pediment.

The single nave interior has barrel vaults and four chapels on each side.
The presbitery houses a main altar in coloured marble and four paintings by the XVIII century painter Giuseppe Marchetti.
In the second chapel on the right, we can admire the reconstruction of Lourdes cave, where Our Lady appeared to the maid Bernadette Soubirous.
The next chapel preserves a byzantines pluteus in Greek marble, dating back to VII century.

The adjoining former monastery was inhabited by enclosed nuns (closed).
