The museum is hosted in a modern building, built in 1981, in Alfonsine. It preserves documents relating to the hard times of World War II in Romagna, with a particular attention to the so called “Gothic Line”. The main collections deal with weapons, uniforms, flags and the most peculiar objects used by soldiers and then reconverted to daily use.
The Museum offers two thematic routes, the first one regards the passage of Allies, while the second is centered on the local Resistance. There’s also a multimedial didactic hall.
The emotional room “il Rifugio“, inaugurated in 2017, allows the visitor to experience the sensations experienced by civilians who were looking for shelters during the aerial bombardments thanks to sounds and movements.
The building houses also the Municipal library; since 1997 Alfonsine is the seat of the important historical archive of the Province of Ravenna, named “Istituto storico della Resistenza e dell’Età Contemporanea della Provincia di Ravenna”, which is made of over 120,000 documents, 470 magazines and an historical library with over 5,000 books.
