PIAZZA DELLA LIBERTA’

Piazza della Libertà was the heart of the town already in the XI century. However, the present structure dates back to the last decades of the XVIII century, when the town was radically trasformed by apostolic legates.

Located on the course of the ancient “Strada Maestra”, the wide and elegant square hosts important public and religious building of Bagnacavallo: Town Hall, Goldoni Theatre, Palazzo Vecchio, Civic Tower and Saint Michael Church.

Piazza della Libertà is located on the course of the ancient “Strada Maestra” (the present via Mazzini, Garibaldi, Farini) bordering a bank of the river on which the town was founded. The square originates from the market held by the entrance of the village, according to middle age traditions till the half of the XVII century the square was really small (about a quarter of the present surface). Later on, when changes were made, it was necessary to demolished several noble buildings which allowed the square to be widened.

The square houses many events: performances, concerts, open air theatre season, sport meetings and festivals. A charming view of the square is in the film “L’ Agnese va a morire” directed by Giuliano Montaldo and shot in several town of Bassa Romagna.
